Russian judge fired for nodding off in court
London, Feb. 2 : A Russian judge from the far eastern city of Blagoveschensk was forced to resign after he dozed off during a trial and then sentenced the defendant to five years imprisonment.
Yevgeny Makhno stepped down this week after a video of him sleeping during a fraud trial last summer went viral, the Daily Mail reported.
He has been nicknamed as "napping judge," in some of the clips.
The secret video shot during Andrei Naletov's trial also showed Makho playing on his mobile phone during the court proceedings.
According to Russian political newspaper Pravda, Naletov's outraged family leaked the video to rights groups and now Makho might meet the iron hand of Russia's justice system.
Attorneys said that he can be charged under the Criminal Code article "Knowingly giving unlawful judgment, decision or other judicial act."
But Makhno has claimed that he was not sleeping, but listening with his eyes closed.
If he does not face criminal charges, he could get re-instated in the court system after taking new exams.
