Rookie Raja skips breakfast in Davis Cup excitement
New Delhi, Feb 2 : Debutant Purav Raja Saturday was so excited to play his first Davis Cup match with Leander Paes that he even skipped his breakfast.
Raja and Paes won their doubles rubber against South Korea as they beat Yong-Kyu Lim and Ji Sung Nam 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-2 to bring India's campaign back on track here at the R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium. South Korea now lead lead 2-1 with the two reverse singles to be played Sunday.
"This was the biggest day and match of my life, playing with Leander and for India in a Davis Cup match and that too ending up winning. Having butterflies in the stomach is actually an understatement. Everyone kept telling me to stay relaxed and to keep breathing during the match because I was so nervous. I was so excited today that I didn't even have breakfast," said Raja, who is getting married in the next two-and-a-half weeks.
"Leander has been on the tour for so long, has the quickest pair of hands, is one of the best players in the world. I was under pressure in the morning but we got through," added the 27-year-old, who has a doubles ranking of 161 in the world.
