New York, Feb 2 : The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Friday strongly condemned the terrorist attack against the United States embassy in Ankara, Turkey, which resulted in one death and several injuries.
In a statement issued to the press late Friday, Council members expressed their deep sympathy and sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the "heinous" act.
According to media reports, a suicide bomber detonated explosives strapped to his body after entering an embassy gatehouse, killing a Turkish security guard. The attacker was reportedly a member of a far-left group that is anti-US and is listed as a terrorist organization by Washington.
"The members of the Security Council condemned the new and recurring acts of violence against diplomatic and consular representatives, which endanger or take innocent lives and seriously impede the normal work of such representatives and officials," the statement added.
The Council reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable regardless of their motivations, whenever and by whomsoever committed.
