Vice President to inaugurate Airport terminals

Chennai, Jan 30 : Vice-President Hamid Ansari will inaugurate the newly built International and Domestic terminals and upgraded Airside facilities at international airport here tomorrow.

Addressing a press conference here today, Airports Authority of India Chairman V P Agarwal said AAI was detemined to provide state of the art terminal buildings with spacious glass and structures.

The capacity of airports in the country was expected to reach 271.24 million passengers by the end of the 12th plan year which would be adequate to handle the projected demand of 268.44 million passengers upto 2016-2017, he said, adding to meet this target AAI had constructed and recently inaugurated terminal buildings at Kolkata, Raipur and Indore.

The design of Chennai domestic and international terminal buildings was selected on the basis of global competition. The unique feature of the building was The arrival tube that connects the landside with the airside operations through the central courtyard.

Mr Agarwal informed that to handle the increased passenger volume and cope with future growth and demand, AAI has constructed a new domestic terminal building and international building with a combined area of 1,33,462 sq mts.

The handling capacity of the domestic and international terminal would increase from six million and three million passengers to 16 million and seven million per annum respectively, he said and added that the new domestic and international terminals had been carefully crafted with efficient floor that makes sure that every inch of the terminal was utilised.

'The design incorporates vibrant sustainable gardens and the structural framework to allow natural light to permeate the terminal with a constantly changing pattern of shade and shadow. Lush gardens are visible throughout the terminal creating unique dialogue between engineering and nature," he added.
