Death toll in Uttarkashi road accident reaches 13
Dehradun, Jan 30 : The death toll in the Uttarkashi road accident reached 13 with the authorities confirming eight more deaths overnight.
The accident occurred when an apparently over-loaded vehicle carrying fair revellers, including women and children, rolled into a deep gorge last evening in Mori block of Uttarkashi.
According to State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC)sources, the rescue and relief operations, which were hampered due to cold and dark last night, have again been launched and all local civil and police officials were present at the site.
The vehicle, carrying unspecified number of people from a fair in Jakhol, was on way to Netwad when it slipped on the snow-covered hilly road near Panv Talla village and rolled into a 500-metre-deep gorge, SEOC sources said.
Being a remote area, the information regarding the accident was not readily available and the exact number of victims, the type of vehicle and other details were still awaited, they said.
According to 108 sources, the ambulances from Mori and Purora were rushed to the site of accident. The injured were taken to hospitals in Mori and Purola from where four were referred to the Doon hospital here.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna has expressed grief over the accident and prayed for peace to the departed souls and early recovery for the injured. He has also ordered magisterial probe into the accident and directed officials to provide all possible help to the injured and the victims' families.
