Nagaland Congress nominates 1st woman candidate

Kohima, Jan 30 : For the first time in the history of Nagaland Congress, the party has nominated one woman candidate for the February 23 Nagaland Assembly elections and her name has been sent to Congress Screening Committee of the AICC.

According to Nagaland Congress party sources, the party has announced the names of 53 candidates in their first list and the remaining seven candidates were forwarded to the AICC Screening Committee for its recommendation.

In the second list of Congress candidates there is a name of one woman candidate Khegholi Aomi, the party's first woman candidate who will be making her electoral debut.

Ms Khegholi will contest from Ghaspani-I under Dimapur district, who will fight against Khekiho Zhimomi of the NPF and Jacob Zhimomi as an independent candidate.

Legislator Hewoto Awomi of the Congress will now contest from Ghaspani-II.

Aomi declared her candidacy at a function held in Congress Bhavan in Dimapur yesterday.

The Congress had not fielded any woman candidate in the past. However, four women candidates who contested in the last elections were Zeneile from Dimapur-I on a JD (U) ticket; Rose Mary Jamir from Alongtaki seat as an independent, Soly as BJP candidate from Pungro-Kiphire seat and Rhakila in NCP ticket in 2008 Assembly elections.
