Assam Panchyat poll records 65pc turnout

Guwahati, Jan 30 : An estimated 65 percent of the total 51,49,054 voters from eight districts of Assam exercised their franchise in the first phase of the Panchayat poll on Wednesday, officials said.

There were reports of some minor incidents like missing names of eligible voters in electoral rolls, wrong symbols of candidates printed in Nagaon, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sivasagar, Golaghat districts, etc.

The voters of Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Golaghat and Nagaon districts had cast their votes in 8269 polling stations during the first phase poll, which began at 7 am and ended 3 pm.

In the first phase poll, 529 candidates contested in the 164 Zila Parishad constituencies, 2,546 candidates in 861 Anchalik Panchayat constituencies, 2,748 candidates in 861 Gaon Panchayat president constituencies and 22,051 candidates had contested in 8610 Gaon Panchayat member posts.

The second and third phases of the Panchayat poll will be held on Feb 6 and 12 respectively in the rest districts of the state.
