CG organises blood and organ donation camp

Chennai, Jan 29 : As part of Coast Guard day celebrations, the Headquarters, Cost Guard Region (East) conducted a blood donation and organ pledging camp in association with the Government General Hospital and MV Hospital for Diabetes, here today

A defence release said, a total of 101 volunteers comprising Coast Guard officers, men, civilian personnel and family members donated blood, while 52 of them pledged to donate their organs and spread the awareness further

Dr D Shantharam, Vice-Chancellor, Dr MGR Medical University, was the Chief Guest and Dr V Kanagasabai, Dean, Government General Hospital was the guest of honour

Ms Ila Sharma, President Coast Guard Wives Welfare Association (East) along with other members actively participated in the event

"Everyday human blood is becoming increasingly critical in requirement. Every two seconds someone needs blood. Every year, our nation requires about 4 crore units of blood, out of which only a meager 40 lakh units of blood are made available," the release said

"There was a long queue of patients waiting for organ transplantations in our nation. Many are losing their precious lives due to non-availability of various organs and tissues for transplantation," it said, adding, more awareness programmes and organ pledging drives should be organised to save the lives of the patients who are suffering from diseases causing various organ failures
