Mysore University gets 'A' grade from NAC

Mysore, Jan 29: The University of Mysore has been awarded 'A' grade with 3.47 GPA by NAC Accreditation for its excellence in Higher Education, said Vice-Chancellor Prof K S Rangappa said today

Addressing a press conference, he said getting this upgradation would further boost the university's efforts in offering more education programs and the opportunity to demonstrate and document quality performance for making it an International University

Even though 3.47 GPA was very low compared to other Universities in the country, the university was preparing to set right the weakness highlighted in the letter of UGC which was received from the NAC, he pointed out

The Vice-Chancellor said the university was further eyeing innovative university status for which an assistance of Rs 100 crore to Rs 300 crore was available

The V C agreed that the standard of teaching as well as the research works has declined during the last few years and efforts would be made to improve them in the coming years

Admitting that the Varsity was facing severe financial crisis, he said necessary steps would be initiated to enhance new resources to become self-sufficient in future

Stating the major part of the university funds received from government would go towards salary and pension coming to around Rs 110 crores, he said the state government released only Rs 69 crore

Even with the efforts of the university recently to get released Rs 25 crore from the government, even then it would falls short, he added

Prof Rangappa said the University has approached the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development for additional funds, being the oldest university of the country, in order to improve the education standard at par with international universities

It also submitted a separate plan to seek funds of Rs 50 crore from the UGC during the 12th plan period

He said the university was intent to open an International Centre for Chemistry, Biology and drug discovery soon with the assistance and collaboration of other universities in the world. An initiative has been mooted with Japan Government in this record

The University would complete 100 years of establishment in 2016 and shortly, a separate Centenary Celebration Committee would be formed to prepare the plans, he said

University lecture series every month by the various scholars across the country would be organized on different topics besides teachers assessment would be made by the students every year which would give further increase the standard of education and co-ordination among themselves, he added

Referring to allegations against him on various issues, he said he was ready to face any probe and challenged his detractors to come before public with necessary documents on the allegations they had been making against him
