Jaya's Rs 1,740 cr fillip to govt staff housing

Chennai, Jan 29 : Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced a slew of measures to provide pucca dwellings for government employees and members of the general public and ensure development of areas not coming under the master plan

An official statement here today said the Chief Minister ordered the demolition and reconstruction of rented apartment complexes meant for government employees as well as for people under the self-financing scheme at an higher Floor Space Index (FSI) at a cost of Rs 1,740 crore

Under this scheme, a total of 6,254 new apartments will come up in 17 places in the city

Of this, 3,646 apartments will be provided to government employees on rent and the remaining 2,608 units will be for the general public under the self-financing scheme

The release said considering the dilapidated condition of the 2,238 rented apartments in these 17 places and taking into account the fact that the cost of renovation will be high, the government decided to demolish all these apartments and go for new construction with higher FSI

These apartments will come up at Lloyds Colony, Peters Colony and Todunter Nagar in the city
