Over 40 dangerous criminals absconding in Britain
At least 42 dangerous criminals - 37 murderers and five rapists - are absconding in Britain since the past three years, a media report said Monday.
Besides, notorious paedophiles, kidnappers and robbers are also on the run, the Daily Express reported.
Many criminals disappeared while on day release or from open prisons.
Some were working in charity shops or on work placements to prepare them for life out of jail.
"People will be astonished. The public expects to be protected from serious offenders and the fact that so many can abscond is outrageous," said Tory MP Philip Davies, who uncovered the figures.
Figures from the ministry of justice show that 679 prisoners absconded between 2009-10 and 2011-12.
They also include 149 robbers, 15 guilty of grievous bodily harm, and three of attempted murder.
