An Andhra Pradesh court on Monday directed the state police to register a case of cheating against Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram for giving making false commitment to the people of the state over the Telangana issue.
The court order came as protests broke out in Hyderabad with pro-Telanagana activists clashing with the police after agitation intensified in the wake of the Centre's decision to defer the statehood demand.
The Rangareddy District Court passed the order in response to a petition filed by Andhra Pradesh Junior Advocates Association that alleged the Union Ministers of cheating the people by delaying the decision on the matter.
The court asked the LB Nagar Police to register a case against the two Union Ministers under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Meanwhile, seven Congress MPs from Telangana warned they would resign from the party.
"The MPs said they will send in their resignations to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday," CNN-IBN reported.
India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday said they will form Telanagna state 'within 24 hours' if the party is 'voted to power'.
"If our party comes to power then we will form Telanagna state within 24 hours after forming the government," BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told media.
The Congress, which rules both the state and the Centre, said that more time was needed for consultations with leaders from the state, extending indefinitely an apparent deadline set by the Union Home Minister.
"We need more consultations with senior leaders of the three regions of Andhra Pradesh (coastal Andhra, Telangana and Rayalaseema). We will invite them to Delhi along with the chief minister and state Congress chief," Congress spokesperson Ghulam Nabi Azad said.
"There is no deadline but the talks will be held as soon as possible," he said, when asked about the Jan 28 deadline Shinde had appeared to set when he promised a decision within one month on Dec 28.
