Two GNLA militants killed in Assam
At least two hardcore cadres of Garo militant group Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) were killed in a gun fight with security forces in Assam's Goalpara district along with Meghalaya border on the wee hours of Tuesday, officials said.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of police and army launched a search operation at Khardang area under Krishnai police station in the district.
"When we reached the area covered by dense forest, the militants, who were hiding, fired on the troops and forced to us to exchange bullets," a top police official said.
"Heavy rounds of bullets were exchanged from both sides, in which two militant of the banned organization were killed on the spot," police said.
Security forces recovered one foreign-made pistol and several rounds of live ammunition from possession of the slain militants.
The slain militants are yet to be identified.
The Garo outfit group and anti-talk faction group of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) are active in Goalpara district.
Both outfits have reportedly planned to strike ahead of Republic Day in Assam and Meghalaya and during the assembly poll in Meghalaya.
