Narayanan stuns GM Czebe Attila, joins leaders

Double International Master Norm holder S L Narayanan (6.5) stunned Hungarian Grandmaster Czebe Attila in the eighth round in the Chennai Super Kings 5th International Grandmaster chess tournament 2013 at Media Hall, Nehru Stadium, Chennai here today.

The win took the youngster from Thiruvananthapuram to the top of the table with 6.5 points. Sharing the top spot at 6.5 points were GMs Aleksandrov Aleksej (Belarus), Adhiban Baskaran, M R Lalith Babu (both India), Teske Henrik (Germany), Lu Shanglei (China) among others.

In the top board, Grandmaster Adhiban drew with fellow Indian GM Lalith Babu in an English game that lasted 28 moves. A draw in the second board between GM Teske Henrik (Germany) and Wan Yunguo (China) allowed a few more to join the leaders at the top. The title chances of aspirants have now become wide open. Local hope Karthikeyan Murali suffered a setback as he went down to top seed Grandmaster Aleksandrov Aleksej in a Queens Gambit game that lasted 64 moves.

With two International Master Norms to his credit, S L Narayanan is on course for the third one as he grounded higher rated Grandmaster Czebe Attila of Hungary. The Benko Gambit game was well handled by the Kerala youngster who kept his cool and charted his way to win in 46 moves.

Hope for Norm chances rest with Indian juniors S L Narayanan, R Vaishali, B Kumaran and Wan Yunguo (China) as three more rounds remain to be played.
