The Coast Guard has seized a Panama flagged vessel, M V Izumo, allgedly involved in hitting a fishing boat about 18 nautical miles off Beypore near Kozhikode last evening.
Sources here said the ship was now on the outer anchorage of the Cochin Port and Marine Department and Police informed for further proceedings, including registering case.
Following information after the incident, the Coast District Headquarters No 4, based here, started to look into the veracity of the reports and Indian Coast Guard sent a Dornier aircraft and two fast patrol vessels in the area to locate the ship.
The Coast Guard located two ships at 0430 hrs and brought both -- M V Izumo and Indonesian Vessel Pengai-- to Kochi.
However, the Indonesian ship allowed to leave after enquiry and MV Izumo detained for further investigation, Coast Guard sources said.
Three fishermen were injured when the cargo ship hit a fishing boat which ventured into deep sea for fishing.
The injured were rescued by another fishing boat when it sunk in the deep sea and were admitted to a hospital at Kozhikode.
In a similar incident, five fishermen lost their lives after their boat was hit by M V Prabhu Deva, a Singapore flagged vessel, off the coast of Alappuzha in March last year.
