Police today arrested former Trinamool Congress MLA Arabul Islam for his alleged attack on former state minister and senior CPI(M) leader Abdur Razzak Molla.
Mr Islam was arrested from Bantala on E M Bypass in southern fringe of the city.
He would be produced before the Baruipur court soon.
Informatively, Mr Molla had been hospitalised after attack on him on January six allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists at Bhangar in South 24 Paraganas.
Mr Molla is still under treatment at the hospital following the incident.
Two days after attack on Mr Molla, a CPI(M) procession, on way to the city from Bhangar, was attacked by alleged Trinamool Congress supporters.
Mr Islam also allegedly led the attack, which resulted in a large scale violence between CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress supporters in the area.
Governor M K Narayanan had also expressed concern over the Bhangar violence and observed, 'Goondaism is on in the state' and urged the administration to maintain law and order.
CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat today visited Mr Molla at the hospital and wished his speedy recovery.
Earlier, former chief minister Budhadeb Bhattacharya, opposition leader in the Assembly Surya Kanta Mishra and other CPI(M) leaders also visited the hospital.
