Panchayat president stabbed over water dispute

A civic chief sustained serious injuries when he was repeatedly stabbed by his foe with a knife over sharing water for irrigation purpose at Veerai village in Sivaganga district, today.

Police said there was enmity between Veerai Panchayat Union President Ravichandran (48) and one Mahendran for a long period.

The trouble began when Mahendran attempted to divert water from an irrigation tank to his agricultural land.

There as a wordy quarrel between Ravichandran and Mahendran, when the former took objection to diverting the water. Enraged Mahedran stabbed Ravichandran repeatedly and escaped from the spot.

The critically injured Panchayat President was rushed to the government hospital. Meanwhile, police personnel were deployed In the village to prevent any backlash over the attack.
