Coir Kerala organises competitions for workers, students

A series of competitions for coir workers, college students and photography enthusiasts will be organised as part of the Coir Kerala-2013 international trade event.

The theme of the photography competition, which is open to all, will be 'The Unseen Aspects of Coir'. High-resolution photographs sized 18 cm X 12 cm should be submitted, along with a caption and the photographer's name and address.

The first, second and third place winners will get cash prizes of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively.

Essay writing competitions in English and Malayalam languages will be on the subject 'Product Diversification and Technology Upgradation in the Coir Sector'.

The essay competition in Malayalam will be open to all and in English to college students only. Submissions should be no more than five pages (2,500 words) long.

Cash awards of Rs 10,000, Rs 7,000 and Rs 5,000 will be given to first, second and third prize winners in each language category. Entries for the essay and photography competitions should reach the District Project Office (Coir), Coir Corporation Building, Alappuzha -1, before January 25, 2013.

A number of skill contests and cultural competitions will also be held specifically for coir workers along the sidelines of Coir Kerala 2013, which is being organised in Alappuzha from February 1-6.

Rope making (by hand) contests will be held in Chertala for 'Vaikom Coir' and in Kayamkulam for 'Arattupuzha Coir', while the competition for rope braiding using machines will be held at the Coir Corporation Kanichukulangara unit in Alappuzha.
