Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Arabul Islam was arrested on Thursday for his alleged attacks on Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) MLA Abdur Rezzak Mollah and other workers in West Bengal earlier this month, reports said.
According to reports, the West Bengal Police arrested him from Eastern Metropolitan Bypass area.
He will produced in a Baruipur court later in the day.
Amid tight security, he was taken to a hospital for medical examination.
The police have booked the TMC leader under several charges including Section 307(attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), reports said.
On Jan 6, Abdur Rezzak Mollah was attacked and badly injured by a group allegedly led by TMC leader Islam at Bhangore area in South 24 Parganas district of the state.
Rezzak was hit on the eye, lips, stomach and abdomen, reports said.
He was admitted to a hospital after the attack.
The TMC later said the incident was a drama staged by the CPI-M.
Rezzak alleged that he was roughed up by Islam himself among others.
On Jan 8, several CPI-M activists sustained bullet injuries when clashes broke out at Bhangore between the communists and the ruling TMC.
Several vehicles were torched during the clashes which led to hospitalization of at least six CPI-M men, including some with bullet injuries, CPI-M leaders said.
Officials confirmed firing and arson and injuries to several people.
The CPI-M men were injured in the attack at a procession taken out by the communists to protest the attack on senior party leader and former minister Rezzak on Jan 6.
CPI-M alleged that the attack on them at Bhangore's Bamanghata was again at the instance of Islam, a former MLA , who earned notoriety for a series of anti-social activities blamed on him.
