Fishing boat hit by merchant ship

A fishing boat, which ventured into deep sea for fishing, has reportedly been hit by a merchant ship about 18 nautical miles off Beypore off the coast of Kerala today.

The fishing boat got reportedly sunk in the incident which is said to have occurred at about 1545 hrs today, a defence release said here.

According to available information, the three fishermen in the boat had been rescued by another boat in the vicinity and are being brought ashore.

Coast District Headquarters No 4 based at Kochi was looking into the veracity of the reports.

Simultaneously Indian Coast Guard has launched a Dornier aircraft and two fast patrol vessels in the area, it added.

Accoring to a report from Kozhikode, the three fishermen, identified as Rafique, Rafi and Muneef, all hailing from Chaliyam in Kozhikode district, were injured in the incident, had been admitted in the nearby hospital at Kozhikode.
