Thousands of devotees from different parts of the country this evening witnessed 'Makarajyothi' (the celestial star) and 'Makaravilakku' which marked the finale of the two-month-long annual pilgrimage season at Lord Ayyappa temple in South Kerala.
The makaravilakku appeared thrice atop Ponnambalamedu, a hill situated towards eastern parts of the shrine, at 1833 hrs, amid chanting of 'Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa' by the devotees.
Kerala police had made elaborate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident. About 4,000 police personnel were involved in the crowed-control measures this year.
An estimated half a million devotees flow to Sabarimala every year to have a darshan of this ritual.
