Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy formally inaugurated the 16th edition of the Malabar Mahotsavam, the tourism festival of Kozhikode, at a function here this evening.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Chandy congratulated the organisers for the successful conduct of the event participated by people from all religions.
Such events, attended by people ignoring their religious affiliation, should be emulated by others, he said.
Talking at the function, Tourism Minister A P Anil Kumar said the government has decided to double the assistance for conducting the programme to Rs 20 lakh.
The function also witnessed presentation of Kalakshetra Award,instituted for the first time, to five eminent personalities, including Guru Chemencherry Kunhiraman Nair, for their contribution to their respective fields.
Kozhikode Mayor Prof A K Premajam, M P M K Raghavan, MLA A K Saseendran, and A Anil Kumar, former Minister M T Padma and district Collector K V Mohan Kumar, among others, were present, on the occiasion.
Performance by ace dancer and cine star Shobana and her troupe and Sarod Maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his sons Aman Ali Khan Ayan Ali Khan were part of the cultural programmes arrayed as part of the fete which would be concluded on January 15.
