Situation remained tense in Hyderabad on Friday as Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) supporters pelted stones at police, protesting the arrest of party leader and MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi for his purported hate speech at a rally last month.
The police fired tear gas shells to disperse the agitating mob.
The protesters started pelting stones at the police after the Friday prayers at Mecca Masjid near Charminar, reports said.
Demanding immediate release of the Owaisi, his supporters were seen raising pro-MIM slogans and even held pictures of the arrested leader.
Owaisi was sent to judicial custody till Jan 22 on Wednesday, reports said.
Owaisi, who was arrested on Jan 8 for his hate speech at a rally last month, was produced before the magistrate early on Wednesday and sent to Adilabad Jail at the crack of dawn.
On Jan 8, the MLA's arrest followed his medical tests at a government hospital here after his return from London, media reports said.
Owaisi has been booked in three different "hate speech" cases and was asked to appear before the police on Jan 7.
The Andhra Pradesh leader returned from London on the same day and was greeted by a large number of his supporters.
He was in London for treatment of intestinal injuries that he had suffered when he was attacked by rivals over a land dispute.
