Amid national outrage over series of sexual assaults on women in the country, a 39-year-old woman was allegedly raped by three men at Naranapuram village near Sivakasi in this southern district on Sunday night.
Police sources said today that the trio, identified as L Solaikumar (21), A Thirunavukkarasu (26) and K Yesuraj (47), barged into the house of the victim, acting on information passed by their associate G Srinivasan (38) that she was alone and raped her. The woman's husband was on a pilgrimage to Sabarimala.
On a complaint from the victim, police have registered a case under Sections 109 (abatement to crime), 450 (trespass), 376 (gang rape), 324 (causing hurt with weapons) and 506 read with IPC 34 and arrested the quartet.
Srinivasan was arrested on the charges (abatement to crime) of passing information to the culprits about the woman staying alone in the house. The woman was admitted to the government hospital, here for injuries in her spine during the alleged rape.
The incarcerated quartet refuted the rape charges and accused the woman of foisting false case against them. The case was fallout of enmity between Srinivasan and the woman's husband, they alleged during police investigation.
The accused would be remanded to judicial custody later in the day, police said.
