15,000 km of road laid: Minister

Tamil Nadu Minister for Highways and Minor Ports Edappadi K Palanisamy today said for the last 18 months after AIADMK Government came to power in the state, 15,000 km of roads had been laid.

After inaugurating the 73rd annual meet of Indian Road Congress and opening the Exhibition here, he said for the sixth time this road congress had been held in the state and the state government helped by providing Rs 3.3 crore as financial assistance to the exhibition.

This exhibition will help highways engineers and road contractors know about the modern technology and newly developed machines to lay the roads.

He said to modernise state highways department, the government had opened two information centers at a cost of Rs three crore to help to know the quality of the roads. Mr Palanisamy said to improve the economy of the country, it was necessary for road infrastructure for easy, safe and quick delivery of goods.

He said the government had allocated Rs 5,250 crore in the budget to develop 5,000 km of roads in the state.

He said in the last 18 months, 8,700 km roads were widened, 7,500 km roads repaired, 14 new railway bridges constructed.

He said 2,762 crore had been allocated for 150 road infrastructure works.

In another ten years, Rs 1.33 lakh crore will be spent for widening the roads for 2,000 KM into sixway and eightway among others.
