Bullets from service rifles went off accidentally

Tension prevailed for a while as four bullets meant for the service rifles of the Tamil nadu police department went off accidentally at the oil refinery of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) at Narimanam near here today.

Police said, five armed women police constables attached to the Nagapattinam district Armed Reserve Police were deputed for bandobust duty there, while two of them in night duty and three of their colleagues took rest in their rest room. All of sudden four bullets out of 40 stored safely in a box went off due to suspected over heat, with huge noice.

Heard the explosion sound, the women police constables and other officials of the ONGC rushed to the spot and found that 4 bullets were accidentally went off. They replaced the remaining 36 bullets to a safer place and avoided a major mishap, police added.

Police are investigating.
