As many as 150 agriculturists affiliated to the CPI, including 25 women, were arrested when they attempted to picket the Collectorate here.

Mr N Rangasamy, when he was the Congress Chief Minister, had announced that playgrounds would be constructed in every commune.

Accordingly, it was proposed to acquire the land belonging to the Moolanathan Temple at Bahour here for the construction of a playground.

The administration had offered to acquire the land for Rs 1.40 lakh per acre, while the cost of the land was Rs one crore per acre in the open market.

The agriculturist association intervened and demanded that the government not acquire the land or lease should pay Rs one crore per acre. To press this, they took out a procession from the Jeevanandam statue to the Collectorate. Police waylaid them and caught hold of them.

The volunteers of the Meenava Makkal Kazhagam today held a demonstration near the light house here to protest the failure of the government to construct houses for 45 tsunami- affected families of Vambakeerappalayam here.
