The cost of studying at the coveted IITs just went up by Rs 40,000 a year.
Union HRD minister MM Pallam Raju on Monday said the annual fees of the IITs will be hiked from Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000 from 2013.
However, no tuition and hostel fee will be charged from SC and ST students and students whose parents' annual income is less than Rs 4.5 lakh, will continue to get 100 per cent scholarships, said a report.
Raju said the move aimed to make the IITs attain financial independence.
In 2011, the Kakodkar Committee had recommended a hike of Rs 2-2.5 lakh per annum from the existing Rs 50,000.
