Odisha govt failed to procure paddy from farmers: Congress
Senior Congress leader and Leader of opposition in Odisha Asembly Bhupinder Singh today alleged that farmers in the state were suffering a lot as the Naveen Patnaik government has failed miserably to open sufficient number of mandis across the state to check distress sale of paddy.
Mr Singh said though as per a decision taken at a meeting convened by Speaker P K Amat, the government had assured that 3,000 mandis would be opened by December 15 but at several places but the mandis were yet to be opened forcing the farmers to go for distress sale .
He said it was also decided that a review meeting would be convened a week after to take stock of the situation but it had not yet been convened.
The Congress leader said the farmers were not getting Minimum Support Price(MSP) announced by the government and were forced to sell their paddy at a price much below the MSP.
Mr Singh said despite a bumper crop this year, the farmers were not able to sell their paddy as the government had fixed a ceiling on the paddy procurement.
He demanded that the government procure the entire paddy and the ceiling on procurement be uniform and not vary from district to district.
