Pomp, gaiety usher in New Year in AP; Guv, CM greet Prez
Pomp and gaiety marked the New Year in Andhra Pradesh as Governor E S L Narasimhan and Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy called on President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapathi Nilayam in Bolarum and extended their greetings.
The celebrations were low key as senior politicians including the President, the Governor and the Chief Minister decided not to take part in the celebrations due in sympathy with the Delhi gangrape victim on December 16.
People thronged temples in the state and offered prayers seeking the blessings of God.
The temple town of Tirupati had the maximum number of devotees while in the state capital and in other places, people dressed in new clothes visited the temples and offered prayers.
The temples in Srisailam, Vijayawada, Srikalahasti, Yadagirigutta and Simhachalam were packed with devotees. The Saibaba temple at Dilshuknagar in the city had big queues from early morning itself.
