The Andhra Pradesh Government has suspended the laterite mining operations in Vanthada village of Prattipadu Mandal and the orders issued to Sobhan Babu mining lessee by P S Sarma, Regional Controller of Mines Hyderabad, Central Mining Department, were received here today.

Talking to reporters, District Collector Neethu Kumary said the lessee Sobhan babu had failed to respond to the show cause notices served on him for carrying on mining operations in violation of clause 13(2) of the 1998 Mines Conservation and Development Act.

"The Senior Assistant Controller of Mines G C Sethi during his inspection on October 23, 2009, had found that the mining operations were not in tune with the sanctioned area plan. As against 81,675 tonnes of laterite to be mined during 2008-2009, the lessee had mined as much as 3,14,272 tonnes," he said.

Two show cause notices were served on Sobhan Babu on 26 February 2010 and on 10 June 2010. Instead of clarifying the extent of mining done, he preferred to reply that he would submit the modified mining plan approved by the Assistant Director of Mining, Visakhapatnam.

But when he failed to comply with the notices another show cause notice was served on him on August 12 in 2012.

Since he failed to respond even after two years, now orders were issued suspending the entire laterite mining operations in Vanthada village with immediate effect, the Collector added.
