More than 700 workers of CPI and the CPI(M) were arrested today when they laid a siege to the new office set up by the Wallmart, despite the Tamil Nadu government saying a firm no to allowing FDI in the multi-brand retail trade in the state.
Police said among those arrested were CPI State Secretary T Pandian and CPI(M) State Secretary G Ramakrishnan.
During the agitation, some activists pelted stones at the Wallmart office damaging its window panes.
The activists shouted slogans against the Wallmart setting up its shop in Chennai and wanted the government to take steps to send them back.
All the arrested were released later.
