The toll in yesterday's explosion at a firecracker unit in this district of Tamil Nadu rose to eight with three more succumbing to injuries at government and private hospitals last night and early today.
Police sources here said the deceased were identified as Santhi (36), the owner of the unit, Surya (12),Sivakami (40), Kesavan (12), Deepa (12), Thangam (50),Vijaya (37) and Eswari (35).
While Santhi, Surya, Sivakami and Kesavan died on the spot, the others were taken to the Salem Government Hospital for treatment where Deepa died on admission. The others were later shifted to a private hospital. However, they succumbed to the injuries late last night and early this morning. Six others are still undergoing treatment for burn injuries at the Government Hospital.
The mishap occurred when an explosion ripped apart a private fireworks unit at Sathapaadi Village, near Kamanery in Salem District yesterday afternoon.
