5 NCC cadets drown in river in Kerala

Five National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, participating in the national trekking camp at Malayatoor, drowned at Moolamkuzhi Mahaganithara in River Periyar in the district today.

According to police, the deceased were identified as Gulvez Ahamed (18) of Old Govindapuram in Delhi, Dilshan Allam (18) of Okhla in New Delhi, Hemanth Kumar (16) of Tuqlaqbad extension, Muhammed Sishan (18) from Okhla, New Delhi and Tabish Bakri (18), from Moti Mahal, Saeed Nagli, in Uttar Pradesh.

The tragic incident occurred when taking bath in the river in the morning. The North Indian cadets did not know that the area was dangerous due to undercurrent and drowned, the sources added.

There were around 1,000 cadets from 16 states in the country taking part in the eight-day camp which started on December 23 and was scheduled to conclude on December 30.

In the meanwhile, defence source said here that an inquiry had been ordered into the incident.
