Local-lad Jayesh Pungaliya finished the Club Solaris junior ranking Championship Series tennis tournament on a high note winning a double crown ay the Mayur Colony courts, on Friday.
Jayesh, who practices at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana under Coach Hemant Bendre, beat top seed and his doubles partner Aditya Gokhale in a two-hour-thirty-minute marathon.
Seeded second in the boy's Under-16 singles, Jayesh, raced through the first set 6-3, before Aditya, who also hails from Pune, leveled by winning the second set in a tie-breaker. Jayesh, however had the last laugh, winning the decider and complete a 6-3, 6-7 (7-0), 6-4 win.
This is the third title of the year for 15-year-old Jayesh, a Std 11th student of Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal Junior College. Jayesh then joined hands with Aditya to beat Vashisht Cheruku and Siddhant Banthia 4-1, 5-3 in the boy's Under-16 doubles final.
Mysore's C Vashisht won the boys Under-14 title, beating eighth seed Maharashtra lad Armaan Bhatia 7-5, 6-2. Vashisht, who was top seed in the Under-14 event, won his fifth title of the year, and second in Pune.
He had won the Asian Under-14 title at Balewadi in April this year. Vashisht is coached by former Davis Cupper Srinath Pralhad at the SAT Sports in Bangalore.
Tamil Nadu's girl R Sai Avanthika was the unlucky girl, losing in all three finals that she played. She lost the girls U-14 final to top seed Zeel Desai from Gujarat 6-4, 2-6, 2-6.
Zeel, a std 9th student from HB Kapadia New English High school, is coached by Jignesh Rawal at the Racquet Academy in Ahmedabad. This is her sixth title of the year, and second in Pune, having won the Asian U-14 title at Balewadi in April.
Mumbai girl Pareen Shivekar turned out to be the player of the day. The unseeded girl who practices at Khar Gymkhana, eased past second seed Avanthika 6-3, 6-2 in the girls U-16 final. This is Pareen's fifth title of the year.
The girls Under-16 doubles title went to Shivani Ingale/Simran Kejriwal, who defeated Vaibhavi Deshmukh/R.Sai Avanthika 5-4 (7-2), 2-4, 7-4.
The prizes were given by Jayant Pawar, Director Solaris. Hrishikesh Bhanushali, COO, Solaris Club, welcomed guests while Ravindra Pandey, Tournament Director, gave the vote of thanks.
