External Affairs Minister and Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Thursday said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's victory in the state Assembly election was not an easy task.
"We have lost Gujarat but won Himachal, but it wasn't an easy for Modi. It was close fight. We are in the right direction; we will have go back to drawing board. One election doesn't make him PM candidate," Khurshid told NDTV.
Modi is all set to rule the western state for the third consecutive term as counting of votes in the state of Thursday showed a clear lead in favour of the charismatic leader who is eyeing to emerge as his party BJP's prime ministerial candidate in 2014 general elections.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won 81 seats and leading in 41 seats that went to polls on Dec 13 and 17.
The Congress has won 34 seats and leading in 22 seats till results were showing at 1 pm.
In the 68-seat Himachal Pradesh, the Congress is all set to win the polls and remove the BJP from power .
As per the trends available till 1 pm, the Congress has won 30 seats and leading in six seats.
The BJP has won 22 seats and leading in four seats in the state.
Polling was held on Nov 4 in Himachal Pradesh.
