Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari on Thursday congratulated the people of Gujarat for voting in favour of the party that is all set to win the Assembly polls in the state.
Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is all set to rule the western state for the third consecutive term as counting of votes in the state of Thursday showed a clear lead in favour of the charismatic leader who is eyeing to emerge as his party BJP's prime ministerial candidate in 2014 general elections.
Speaking to media, Gadkari said: "People have voted for BJP for the fifth time and Narendrabhai's leadership for a third time..I thank the people of Gujarat for BJP's big win. I also congratulate the party workers."
The BJP has won 76 seats and leading in 45 seats of the total 182 assembly seats that went to polls on Dec 13 and 17.
The Congress has won 32 seats and leading in 25 seats till results were showing at 1 pm.
Modi himself won from the Maninagar seat beating his Congress challenger Shwetha Bhatt, wife of the anti-Modi IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt.
The third consecutive victory of Modi is crucial for the Gujarat strongman who has pitched himself as the prime ministerial candidate of the BJP for the 2014 general elections.
Modi had campaigned aggressively for the elections, seeking the approval of voters once again while Congress poster boy Rahul Gandhi and party chief Sonia Gandhi had also carried out extensive campaigning.
