Erection of Gautam Buddha's statue in doldrums in Kushinagar

The installation of 500 feet tall bronze-plated statue of Gautam Buddha at His 'parinirvan sthal' here under Maitreya project is still uncertain after the farmers' here refused to give their land for the purpose.

Farmers of Vishanpur Bindviliya village have refused to give their land to the government for the project and decided to move to the High Court on their stand.

The Uttar Pradesh government has fixed January 15 as the deadline for the land acquisition process.

The state government speeded up the land acquisition process after reports came regarding shifting of the project to Bodhgaya in Bihar.

A group of farmers, which met today under the leadership of Bhoomi Bachao Sangharsh Samiti vice-president Kashinath Singh, concluded that the cultivators would not give their lands at any cost. They, however, alleged that they were being threatened to give their lands. Under the project, 81.38 acres land was slated to be acquired in this village, but only 26.58 acres could be acquired.
