Six trainer planes and an Andhra Pradesh Government-owned helicopter, meant for ferrying the Chief Minister, were gutted in a major fire at Begumpet Airport here late last night causing an estimated loss of over Rs 100 crore even as no loss of life was reported.
Sources here today said that the helicopter was meant for use by Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy and belonged to the AP Aviation Academy.
Andhra Pradesh Investment, Infrastructure and Ports Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, who briefed about the situation to Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy at Visakhapatnam where the latter visiting as part of three-day Indiramma Bata Programme, said the Rs 63-crore Agusta Westland Helicopter was being used by the Chief Minister.
He said the chopper was insured and a claim would soon be filed. A 'high-level inquiry' had been ordered into the fire.
