Bridge: Bagaria's team grabs lead in Round 9

Kolkata-based Ajaya Bm consisting of veterans Gobinda Sinha (Khoka), Sudhir Ganguly, Ajay Bagaria himself, Pinaki Khan and Sadhan Bose Monday snatched the pole position again at the end of the Round 9 of the Swiss League for Ruia Gold Cup in the 54th Winter National Bridge Championship at indoor complex of the Geetanjali stadium here.

Bagaria's team which finished at the top Sunday evening after third round but slide to 5th and joint second position after 5th and 8th round took the lead again after conclusion of 9th round with 170 VPs.

A couple of points behind them are Hemant Jalan's team, also from Kolkata who have achieved 168 VPs to be at the second position.

Another strong contender Indian Blues Bombay are at the third place with 167 VPs.

Meanwhile last year's winners Railways "A", after a lack luster performance on Sunday, warmed up late and put up a much better show this day to take the 6th position with 158 VPs behind formidable of Delhi and Shree Cement from Kolkata, both of whom tallied 161 ps.

Railways "A" player Sumit Mukherjee commenting on their performance said "Yes, we were off colour yesterday. Today we have made it up to some extent. It happens sometime."

"There would be one more round tonight and a couple of more rounds tomorrow forenoon before the prequarter finalists are decided. Hopefully we would be at the knock-out stage", Mukherjee said.

Another top notchers -Texan Aces - from Chennai after being at the 3rd position after 5th round Sunday are now occupying 7th spot with 157 VPs after nineth round.

After a total of 16 rounds of Swiss League, the teams those will reach the pre-quarter finals would be finalized.

From pre-quarter finals the tournament would be played on knock-out basis. Beside one more round to be played later tonight, two more rounds would be held Tuesday to decide the round of sixteen.

In Ruia Silver Trophy Chandannagar Bridge Club are at the front with 172 VPs and are followed by Odisha Secretariat Recreation and RKD Infrastructure with 170 and 169 VPs respectively.
