President to visit Tamil Nadu, West Bengal
President Pranab Mukherjee will undertake a three-day visit to Tamil Nadu and West Bengal from Dec 17 to 19, a Rashtrapati Bhavan release said Saturday.
In Tamil Nadu, the president will visit Coimbatore and the nearby Sulur. In West Bengal, he will pay a visit to Santiniketan, the university town in Birbhum district made famous by Rabindranath Tagore, as well as Suri, the headquarters of Birbhum district.
"He will reach Coimbatore on the evening of Dec 17. On Dec 18, the President will present the Presidential Standard to 25th Squadron and 33rd Squadron of the Indian Air Force at Air Force Station, Sulur," the release said.
The 25th Squadron - 'The Himalayan Eagles', has been the lifeline of the armed forces personnel and citizens living on the northern frontier for over five decades, in times of peace as well as war. The 33rd Squadron is the premier transport squadron of the Indian Air Force.
Ahead of the visit, the president expressed happiness that the Presidential Standard was being given to the 33rd Squadron.
"Since its inception Jan 9, 1963, the squadron has rendered exemplary service to the nation. By achieving professional distinction in air transport operations spanning five decades, the squadron has earned for itself a formidable reputation," the president observed in an official message.
On the next day (Dec 19) the president will fly to West Bengal, where he will attend the felicitation function at Suri Vidyasagar College and inaugurate the Centenary Celebrations of award of Nobel Prize to Rabindranath Tagore at Santiniketan.
