Football fraternity loses a giant in T Shanmgam

Veteran Football olympian T Shanmugam passed away lastnight following respiratory problem.

Ninety-three-year-old Shanmugam had been a legend in his time and had represented India in the 1952 Olympics at Helsinki and was in the team that won the Asian gold medal at New Delhi in 1951. He played for Karnataka in the Santosh trophy between 1944 and 54 and had coached the Karnataka team that won the Santosh trophy in 1983-84.

He was also instrumental in the state lifting Santosh Trophy during 1968-69 as coach along with Basheer as Chief Coacha t Cuttack Nationals.

He had been the coach of the famous Goan team Salgaocar for 14 years and enabled it to win a number of tournaments, including Rovers Cup in 1988, Chakola Cup in Kerala, Maharajah Cup in Sikkim, During 1968, National Institute of Sports had deputed him to Japan for Coaching under FIFA along with legends including P K Banerjee, Jarnail Singh and Chunni Goswamy.

Karnataka State Football Association PResident A R Khaleel and other office bearers besides statae sports minitser Appachu rRanjan morned the demise of the football legen and paid their last respects to the body at his residence.
