Immigrant employment rate in Canada rises

Employment among immigrants in Canada increased 4.3 percent in 2011 over the previous year, Statistics Canada announced. The employment rate for the core working-age group of 25 to 54 in 2011 was 75.6 percent, compared to 82.9 percent for their Canadian-born counterparts, according to the announcement Friday.

Most of the growth occurred among established immigrants who had been in the country for more than 10 years, reported Xinhua citing the agency.

However, the rate was still 1.8 percentage points lower than in 2008, the start of the ongoing economic downturn.

This was mostly because the growth in their employment failed to keep pace with the growth in their population, the agency explained.

In 2011, 48 percent of the immigrant labour force in the core group was born in Asia. Of these, those born in India made up 19 percent, the Philippines 18 percent, and China 14 percent.
