Lightning claims 8 lives in Odisha in 2 days: Minister
Eight people were killed and five injured when lightning streeck them in Balasore, Kendrapara and Jagatsinghpur districts of Odisha on December 11 and 12.
Making a statement in the state Assembly today, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suryanarayan Patro said as per the information received from the district collectors, while person one died in Balasore on December 11, three deaths were reported from Kendrapara and and four from Jagasinghpur district on December 12.
Besides, five people also sustained injuries in lightning in Jagatsinghpur district, the minister said, adding that the condition of all the injured was stable.
He further said several residential houses were damaged and standing crops destroyed in these three districts due to hail storm accompanied by heavy rain and lightning on December 11 and 12.
Mr Patro said the next of kin of each victim had been given an assistance of Rs 5,000 while the injured were given an assistance of Rs 2,000 each from the District Red Cross fund.
He said arrangement was being made to provide compassionate assistance of Rs 1.5 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund at the earliest.
