Vizag hospital performs its first heart transplant
The CARE hospital here has successfully conducted its first heart transplant surgery on a 28-year-old man from Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
Addressing a news conference last night, Cardiothoracic Surgeon at CARE hospitals Dr P V Satyanarayana said the heart taken from a 28-year-old brain dead accident victim Naga Babu was transplanted to Mohammed Rafi (28) on December 4 by a team of cardiologists.
He said the first heart transplantation was done in India in New Delhi in 1994 and so far 118 patients had received donor hearts in the country in New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Kochi and Chennai. Visakhapatnam has now joined the list.
He said the patient Mr Rafi was suffering from 'end state heart failure'. He was brought to the hospital for the transplant. He was responding well and would be discharged in three to four days.
