Farmer held: Demand Cauvery row solution
Police took into custody over 500 farmers belonging to Tamil Nadu State Unit of the Bharathiya Kissan Sangam, including its State Unit Vice-President P Ayyakannu when they attempted to resort rail roko agitation at the Railway Junction here today.
The farmers stir was to condemn in the different attitude of the Karnataka and the Central Governments to the Cauvery waters issue.
Mr Ayyakannu told mediapersons that the rail roko agitation was to draw and Central Government's attention in to the plight of the Cauveri delta farmers and to demand justice to them by directing the Karnataka Government to release water to Tamil Nadu.
While thanking the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms J Jayalalithaa for her bold steps by approaching the apex court in the Cauvery water issue and getting a direction from the Supreme Court to gazette the final award of the Cauvery River Water Disputes Tribunal. They also appealed to Ms Jayalalithaa to provide Rs 40,000 per acre as compensation to paddy farmers in the Cauveri delta, and to wrive farm loans.
