Riding on Kevin Pietersen's gutsy knock of 73 runs, England scored 199 runs for the loss of five wickets at the and of the first day of fourth Test match against India at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium here on Thursday.
Indian pacer Ishant Sharma gave a good start to the home side as picked up two quick wickets to reduce England to 16-2.
Sharma picked up both openers, Alastair Cook (1) and Nick Compton (3), to give the visitors an initial jolt.
Pietersen along with Jonathan Trott (44) added 86 runs in the third wicket partnership to help England recover in the match after receiving initial blows.
Pietersen hit 10 boundaries in his 188-ball innings.
Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja scalped the wickets of Pietersen and Trott. Indian spinner Piyush Chawla on the other hand took the wicket of Ian Bell (1).
England scorecard read 139-5 at one point of time in the day.
Joe Root (31*) and Matt Prior (34*) added 60 runs in the sixth wicket partnership as England finished the day at 199-5.
Jadeja and Sharma picked up two wickets for India while Chawla scalped one wicket in the day.
England lead the series by 2-1 margin.
