Festival to offer feast of world cinema from tomorrow
Complementing the annual 'Marghazhi' season of the best of Carnatic music, will be the 10th Chennai International Film Festival which is slated to be held here from tomorrow to December 20, packaging a variety of avante garde and the so called middle of the road cinema as well as some of the commercial variety.
While the icing on the cake will be Bollywood icon and 'Quiz Master' Amitabh Bachchan gracing the closing ceremony, maestros in the making from the music school of double Oscar winner A R Rahman will be performing in the opening ceremony.
Conceived in 2003 by the Chennai based Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation, the festival which has a new sponsor-real estate firm Casa Grande and the Tamil Nadu Government, the festival will have the World Cinema Section its highlight. Amour (MichaelHaneka-2012 Cannes Prie D'Or or Golden Palme award, Pieta (South Koreaen Director Kim ki duk that won four awards in Venice), The Gardner(iran), Le Grnd Soir(The Grand Evening-French), Sister(french-Swiss directed by Ursula Meir-2012 Berlin Silver Awrd), Wr Witch)Canada-Kim Nguyen), Rust and Bone(France/Belgium), Porifrio(Colombia) and Melancholia (Denmark) will regale fans of artistic cinema, one of the organising Committee members actress director Suhasini Maniratnam said.
This section will also include Oscar nominated Bangladeshi film Pleasure Boy Komala by Humayun Ahmed, Oscar award winning from Japan Departure by Yojiro- Takita, Someone in Love (Japan), Angels Share(UK) and Epilogue(Israel).
Film buffs would never get a chance to watch such films but for festivals such as this, Ms Suhasini said.
