The Laryngectomee Society of Apollo Hospitals celebrated its 13th anniversary here today.
Together with the special invitee, Tennis Star Sania Mirza, they sent across a strong message that cancer was curable and one could live a normal life as cancer survivors.
Quoting the example of cricketer Yuvraj Singh, Dr Umanath Nayak, Consultant Head and Neck Oncologic Surgeon, Apollo Cancer Hospital and Founder President of the 300-member strong Society, said they had many such cancer survivors in their midst.
Sania Mirza interacted with several brave survivors and was appreciative of their courage.
The occasion was used to spread messages of hope and rehabilitation of the patients by way of a walking competition that was to demonstrate their physical well-being despite going through the rigors of the disease and its treatment.
A copy of the book 'Enduring Cancer-Stories of Hope' by Dr Nayak, that details true stories of cancer survivors, was presented to Sania Mirza on the occasion.
The Laryngectomee society is a voluntary self-help rehabilitation group of cancer survivors who have undergone surgery for the removal of their larynx (voice box) as treatment for cancer of the throat.
About 12 per cent of all cancers in India are related to the throat while one lakh new throat cancers are diagnosed annually in the country.
He said most of them were in the advanced stages.
