Fishermen in ten coastal villages of the Southern District of Tirunelveli did not put out to sea in protest against the arrest of four fishermen on the charge of participating in the protest against Koodankulam nuclear power plant, today.
Police said the four fishermen, hailing from Koodankulam were arrested last night under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for instigating and taking part in violent incidents during the stir against the nuclear power project (KKNPP) in September last.
Protesting against the police action, the fishermen of Idinthakarai, Koodankulam, Uvari, Koottapuli, Perumanal, Koothankuzhi, Vairaavikinaru, Chettikulam, Koothappanai and Kooduthaalai struck work demanding immediate release of the fishermen.
The strike call was given by Peoples' Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), a Civil group spearheading the ongoing stir against KKNPP.
